Reviews for Mutant MIG PIR-2 Lime Pocket Size Internet Radio (Electronics) I've had this radio for a couple months and like it very much. I use it at bedside, not as a table radio. The radio uses the excellent VTuner database radio service. With VTuner, you can 1) search for stations you want and have them programmed into the radio and 2)enter your own URLs for stations not shown in the VTuner database that you want to listen to.
I cannot emphasize enough that the key to good 'net radios is that they be associated with an excellent 'cloud' database that keeps up to date and allows you to add your own stations that are not in the database. Without this capability, a 'net radio is useless. This radio utilizes an excellent database!
As for operation, once you get the radio to connect to your WIRELESS router, you can then set up a login to the VTuner database using a web address given to you by the radio's instruction manual. You have to enter the radio's MAC address (available on the radio's screen) to be able to set up your VTuner login account. Once this is done, you can then search for stations to be programmed into your radio. This is a 'cloud' radio---when you turn it on, and select stations, it will update from the database.
The small speaker provides ample volume, but not hi fi sound. The internal battery lasts 10 hours or more and is recharged via a USB port on your computer, but the radio does its reception via your WIRELESS connection, not via USB.
The radio is a small simple to use device. There is a tuning dial that is used to select stations you have programmed into it via the web site.
Reviews for Mutant MIG PIR-2 Lime Pocket Size Internet Radio (Electronics) For the price, this radio isn't bad, but it's missing a basic feature: the ability to mute the audio. The volume control only goes down to one (not zero) so you can't make ads go away. Worse, when you turn it off, it resets when you turn it back on. You must stop and tediously re-navigate to the station you were listening to.
Overall the functionality is very basic but it does work, we had no trouble finding and receiving the stations we wanted to hear. The built-in speaker is OK for news but for music you'll want headphones. The display is cramped black-and-white, but it's enough (barely) for menu and station selections. It's very light and slim, and the bright colors are fun.
